Bach Suite for solo cello no. 1 in G major and 5 in C minor
The dramatic 5th Suite in C minor requires the cellist to tune the A string down to a G, darkening the tone of the cello and providing a new resonance to the lower G string. It is the only cello Suite of the six never
to have been played at the festival. The well-known first Suite in G major is intimate and playful by contrast.
