General manager

We are looking for a General Manager to produce the 2013 Roman River Festival and schools programme.

Roman River Music brings international quality musicians to Colchester and NE Essex for a 10-day festival each year, and also has a large schools programmee, working with over 500 schoolchildren and involving them in composition and performances.

The Director Zelie Jopling, who has led the organisation from its inception in 2000, would like to hand over the management, taking on a smaller role within the organisation. You will inherit an established and well-loved festival, registered as a charity in 2008, with a modest but loyal and growing audience, enthusiastic trustees, volunteers who help with various aspects, and promising collaborative potential with several other cultural organisations in Colchester. We are looking for someone who can capitalise on this and take the festival on to the next stage, in partnership with the Artistic Director Orlando Jopling.

You will need to have the ability to inspire and work in collaboration with a wide range of organisations and people. You will need exceptional people skills in order to retain, attract and motivate the large volunteer workforce necessary for the success of the festival. You will also need experience in fundraising to help secure the funding required to take the Festival to its next stage, and good marketing skills, continuing to widen the audience as the festival grows.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the right person to help shape the cultural profile of Colchester at a particularly exciting time, and to ensure that top quality classical music is an essential part of the mix of culture on offer to those living and working in the area.

You would take the reigns from spring 2013, following a hand-over phase. Zelie Jopling will continue to be available to support and help where necessary.

The fee will be £5,000, paid on a freelance basis. From October until March you will probably need to devote half a day a week to the project, rising to 1 or 2 days/week until August. In September the workload will increase in the leadup to the festival.

If you would like to apply, please read the job description and let us have your CV showing your skills in the areas required, and a covering letter, by 15th October. We will interview on Tuesday 23rd October in Colchester.
